`Freshwater and wetland ecosystems of the boreal forest represent rich ecosystems forming complex network of lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Many wildlife species use and rely on these habitats for their life cycle. In addition to this high biodiversity value, aquatic, wetland, and riparian habitats are used by humans for a variety of activities, of which hydroelectricity, cottage resorts, and nature tourism. Although several scientific works have proposed principles for forest management in those areas, there are few examples of their implementation, perhaps because few management plans have been done or because they have not been reported in the literature. One problem with the management of wetland and riparian areas by forest managers is that their goals for biodiversity conservation are not necessarily shared by other land users. For example, areas preserved from timber harvesting in a biodiversity conservation objective could be converted into resorts or other potential conflicting uses.
